Walking Group Leader Award

WGL Training
The walking group leader award is a nationally accredited award developed by Mountain Leader Training UK (MLTUK).
The WGL is the award for leaders of hillwalking groups in defined terrain and conditions.
The scheme has been designed to complement the long established Mountain Leader Award (ML), which trains leaders to lead walking groups in all mountain areas of the UK and Ireland in summer conditions. Terrain the WGL will prepare you for is:
Course Bullet Open uncultivated, non mountainous high or remote country known as upland, moor, bog, fell hill or down.
Course Bullet Areas enclosed by well-defined geographical or man-made boundaries such as classified roads (areas that merge with mountain regions which do not have well defined boundaries are excluded).
Course Bullet Areas of remoteness that are easily exited within a few hours, returning to a refuge or an accessible road.
Course Bullet Areas where movement on steep or rocky terrain is not required (in either a planned or unplanned
situation).

Our training course programme is combined with day and evening activities over 3 consecutive days.

WGL Assessment
The training course alone is not a qualification, this award is competence based therefore an assessment phase is required to pass and attain certification / qualification for the Walking Group Leader Award.
At climbmts the assessment course will last 3 consecutive days. The scheme syllabus is located in your candidate logbook. The key assessment topics are as above. The WGL award qualifies the leader to lead mountain walks anywhere within the UK.

excellent amenities and transport services. Aberfeldy is truly the adventure capital of Scotland.

WGL Reassessment
WGL reassessment dates are tailored to suit the assessor and candidate availability, additional considerations are the prescribed conditions and technical areas the candidate deferment report lists. Please note;
1. All technical reassessments will take a minimum of 4 to 5 hours, sometimes this might take longer
2. Candidates must ensure their logbook is fully up to date and all appropriate paperwork is visible
3. Candidates must ensure they hold a valid first aid certificate at point of reassessment and present original certificate to assessor
4. All classifications of candidate logbook deferments only have a set administration cost of £50.00
5. All classification of technical or combined log book deferments have a set reassessment cost of £200.00
6. Reassessments are conducted mainly on a 1-1 ratio
7. All reassessments will take place within Aberfeldy and the surrounding area.
