Training
The purpose of the WML scheme is to provide training and assessment in the
skills and techniques
necessary to lead walking parties in the mountains of the UK under winter conditions.
The scheme
excludes roped climbing on technical terrain.
The demands made on the leader in winter are much greater than summer therefore,
the summer mountain leader award is a prerequisite qualification.
Having completed and passed the SML award and with the right winter hill walking
experience the WML award is then accessed. You will need the minimum 20 quality
winter hill days to qualify for registration of this award which is the first
step prior to attending a training course.
Regardless of where you live within the UK you can only register for this award
with Mountain Leader Training Scotland, however, you can register via Mountain
Leader Training UK website click the tab

At point of booking with climbmts you will need your candidate registration number
and your scheme registration date.
Please note when you register for the SML award you are not automatically registered
for the WML scheme the WML scheme requires independent registration and can only
be registered when you have your full SML award and the minimum of 20 winter
hill walks.

WML
Assessment
The training course alone is not a qualification, this award is competence based
therefore an assessment phase is required to pass and attain certification /
qualification of the Winter Mountain Leader Award.
At climbmts the assessment course will last 5 consecutive days. The scheme syllabus
is located in your candidate logbook. The key assessment topics are as above.
The WML award qualifies the leader to lead mountain walks anywhere within the
UK in winter conditions.

Course location
Aberfeldy, North Perthshire, Scotland. This stunning location has access to well
over 30 Munros in the immediate area, our local village of Aberfeldy is surrounded
by hills and forests and is well serviced with excellent amenities and
transport services. Aberfeldy is truly the adventure capital of Scotland.

WML Reassessment
WML reassessment dates are tailored to suit the assessor and candidate availability,
additional considerations are the prescribed conditions and technical areas the
candidate deferment report lists. Please note;
1.
All technical reassessments
will take a minimum of 4 to 5 hours, sometimes this might take longer
2.
Candidates must ensure their logbook
is fully up to date and all appropriate paperwork is visible
3.
Candidates must ensure they hold
a valid first aid certificate at point of reassessment and present original
certificate to assessor
4.
All classifications of candidate
logbook deferments only have a set administration cost of £50.00
5.
All classification of technical
or combined log book deferments have a set reassessment cost of £200.00
6.
Reassessments are conducted mainly
on a 1-1 ratio
7.
All reassessments will take place
within Aberfeldy and the surrounding area.
