Introduction to Ski Mountaineering – NEW

Ski mountaineering is one of the UK’s fastest growing winter sport. This popular course is designed for individuals aspiring to learn the fundamental skills for off-piste ski travel. Our aim is to develop safe, self-reliant ski-mountaineers ready to climb and ski locally or in the great ranges of the world. This course is an excellent foundation for any skier seeking independence in the Scottish alpine arena.

Set in a spectacular environment that provides abundant learning opportunities, this comprehensive course is truly rewarding. The day takes place at the Glenshee ski resort in Perthshire, the perfect ski learning environment. Weather permitting a summit attempt in the afternoon will give you the chance to put your newly developed skills to the test.

Participants should have some ski experience and have an interest in winter walking.

This course is full of learning and fun. It is designed for the skier/hill-walker and provides a solid introduction and inspiration to safely get your way around easy ski tours.

• Ski Mountaineering equipment – how it works and how to use it
• Terrain management (safe, efficient and paced)
• Terrain management uphill track and off piste downhill techniques
• Moving in balance
• Self arrest techniques
• Terrain climbing using ski skin techniques
• Avalanche education
• Basics of navigation using maps, altimeters, and compass
• Choosing ski tours where to go, how to get the perfect trip
• Mountain weather, arctic ecology, hazard assessment, leave no trace ethics
