Winter Navigation

In winter knowing which navigation skills you will need to travel to your destination and back again safely are often underestimated. Navigating in winter needs to be taken seriously. The most important, single mountain skill you need to know is how to navigate when it matters. Coping with winter White-Outs with confidence are a huge challenge for anyone.

Our winter navigation course will cover the following:

• Essential map reading skills – which one you’ll need, when and why
• Navigation equipment - including tips on the use of GPS technology
• Using your compass in poor visibility
• Identifying and relocating your position using slope aspect technique
• Create a winter navigation tool kit that will help you make the right decisions when required
• Planning a winter mountain day, top tips and handy hints
• Avalanche knowledge – know how to select the terrain and route and avoid known danger zones
• Learn to travel your way out of poor visibility
• Leave no trace ethics

Knowing the right course of action will allow you to calmly navigate your way to safety in blizzard conditions. Our course is completely hands on and coaching is delivered by highly confident winter navigators who use these skills on a daily basis.

“ I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thank you for our course last weekend, we completed two Munro’s on the day, with the first being completed in near white-out conditions where snow and cloud were indistinguishable. The course taught us new techniques to utilise on the hills in future. In all we had a marvellous time and gained much from the day. Many thanks.”
