How To Book On A Course
Booking on any of our courses, including seminar events, is easy - by phone, post, fax or e-mail – and your course place will be confirmed once we receive, by post, your completed Booking Form, accompanied by a cheque for your course deposit or you can pay with any major credit card / debit card by telephoning the office number. ( All cheques are payable to "Stuart Johnston"

Booking Form, simplyclick bookings and locate the PDF file and print off a copy. If not, and you would like us to send you one, just ask. When your booking is confirmed you will receive course confirmation and joining instructions. Contact us in advance if you want to check course availability. You can also use our Booking Form to register for ‘The Knowledge’ events, and buy copies of The Hillwalker’s Guide to Mountaineering and The Mountain Skills Training Handbook.

Conditions Of Booking
1. All deposits are non refundable.
2. A bookings is only taken when a deposit/payment is received followed by the balance of the course payment within 31 days of course commencement.
3. If payment procedures are not adhered to SJM reserve the right to cancel said booking with no refund of deposit.
4. Should the course participant cancel within 31 days of course commencement no refund will be payable.
5. All ML and SPA courses require a minimum of 4 bookings to proceed. All other advertised courses require a minimum of 2 bookings.
6. Course participants attending mountain leader and single pitch award courses must ensure they are registered with the appropriate scheme and board prior to attending
the course. Failure to register with the appropriate scheme may result in your course place being cancelled with no refund. We advise all clients to attain outdoor pursuits travel insurance which includes cancellation and curtailment cover.
7. Although unlikely a course may have to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Course participants will be informed immediately and offered either a full refund of monies paid to SJM or an alternative course date. SJM shall not be liable for any course related expenses (such as travel and accommodation).
8. Whilst your safety is at the forefront of our thinking and the highest possible professional standards are practised the participant is expected to be aware that outdoor activities have an element of risk and that in order to ensure their own and others safety they must at all times follow all safety instructions given to them by the instructor / guide / leader. Our insurance does not cover you for inherent risks or participants negligence.
9. SJM reserves the right and discretion to make changes to planned routes and course programmes as a result of adverse weather and impending conditions.
10. SJM reserve the right to refuse participation to participants that we believe to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and in such circumstances no refund will
be given.
11. In confidence please advise SJM staff of any disability or known medical condition including current medication prior to going on the mountain.

Accommodation
Home or abroad we choose venues we believe will give you the best experience possible. Likewise our accommodation, from Alpine huts to Scottish hostels, whether we are arranging it for you or merely recommending a place to stay, we go to great lengths to make sure that you will be comfortable, relaxed, well fed and watered, close to course destinations – and even able to enjoy a refreshment or two in the evening! Whether bunkhouse, guesthouse and hotel – or whether accommodation is included in the cost of your course or not - we can find a facility to suit your taste.

Age & Fitness
Anyone between 18 and 70 are welcome to join our courses. However, young people aged between 14 and 18 are also welcome if accompanied by a participating guardian.
We will be happy to advise and support young groups who may require a tailor made course specifically designed and staffed for their needs.
All clients should be of good health, fitness with some prior aerobic training is recommended should you have little experience of mountain walking.
We are happy to advise on the standards required for each course.


Equipment
All course clients will receive a recommended personal equipment list once a booking form has been confirmed.
All technical equipment is provided this includes; ropes and climbing racks only.
Helmet and harness free of charge if required.
Personal technical items such as; ice axes, boots and crampons

Should you have all your own equipment then please use it for the course. However, if you are considering purchasing new equipment for your course then please do not hesitate to ask for our advise.

Association of Mountain Instructors
The AMI is the representative body of professionally qualified mountaineering instructors in the British Isles.
AMI is committed to guaranteeing quality and promoting good practice in all mountaineering instruction.
AMI members are highly experienced mountaineers who have undergone rigorous training and assessment to qualify under the United Kingdom Training Board (UKMTB) Mountaineering Instructor Award (MIA) and Mountaineering Instructor Certificate (MIC).
So who can do what?
An MIA will instruct and guide mountaineering and rock climbing under summer conditions.
An MIC will instruct and guide at all levels of mountaineering and climbing through summer and winter conditions.
Only those who advertise the AMI logo are full members. When booking a course look out for the AMI logo.
