Scrambling and Mountaineering

Scotland is a land full of classic mountain adventures just waiting to be enjoyed. On their day (and we get plenty!) the likes of the Cairngorms, Ben Nevis, Glencoe, the Northwest Highlands and Skye aren’t just the best of British, but a match for anywhere on earth . Our knowledge of these areas is second to none, and on our courses you will experience some of the very best they have to offer. Whether you are interested in stepping up from hillwalking to ‘mountaineering’, or wish to work on specific skills in the context of a big mountain environment, we can help.

Our Scottish Mountaineering courses usually last from one to five days, and are based in two key areas - Glencoe and Skye – though we are always free to travel to take advantage of the best conditions, or personal ambitions!

Cuillin Ridge Traverse
‘The Misty Isle’ of Skye is a Hebridean jewel and a traverse of its snaking Cuillin Ridge is the country’s finest mountaineering expedition – perhaps the only genuinely alpine mountaineering Britain has to offer. A unique challenge in a spectacularly twisted and vertical landscape, a successful Cuillin crossing demands good planning, plenty of stamina, strong willpower, the right tactics - and the best guides you can find! Our traverse of the chaotic and confusing seven mile spine of lavas and basalts involves over 13,000ft of ascent and takes in 67 (that’s sixty seven!) tops on or adjoining the main Cuillin ridge, including eleven Munros and nine other Munro tops.

We’ll takes two 12-14 hour days to complete this epic mountain journey, with an overnight bivouack planned high on the ridge. Travelling light, we’ll wear mountain boots to walk, scramble and rock climb up to Severe grade in places, with full roped protection where required. Although your experience on this classic traverse line will be fully guided, you’ll also get coached in mountaineering skills such as scrambling moves, abseiling, belaying, rope management and bivouacking.

And there’s a big bonus. As the Cuillin Traverse course is best done over five days (giving us the best opportunity of a good weather window) we’ll also get the chance to take in other classic routes like Pinnacle Ridge, Clach Glas-Blaven Traverse and A’Cioch.

Scrambles On Skye
If you’re not looking to Skye’s full Cuillin Ridge traverse, but still fancy getting to grips with some of the finest scramble routes to be found anywhere in the UK, ‘Scrambles in Skye’ is the course for you – and it’s one of our most popular. We’ll guide and coach you on classic scrambles like: The Inaccessible Pinnacle, Pinnacle Ridge, Clach Glass - Blaven Traverse, A’Cioch and Window Buttress, or any one of the numerous scrambling lines up on to the Cuillin’s spiny crest.

Our ‘Scrambles in Skye’ course will coach many aspects of scrambling including movement on rock, moving together, abseiling, belaying and rope management.

There’s the option of an overnight bivouac or bothy trip too, but if the weather’s on our side you’d be mad to miss it – few sights can beat that from a high mountain camp of the sun setting over the Outer Hebrides. If you want to make the transition from hillwalking to scrambling, this is the course for you.

Scrambles In Glen Coe
Glen Coe is one of the most famous locations in Britain, and rightly so. If Skye is a bridge too far, and you’re looking for an adventurous alternative, the mountains of the massive and brooding ‘glen of weeping’ won’t let you down. The Coe’s amazing chains of granite monoliths tower to over 3,000ft on either side of the A82, and are home to some of the most popular and challenging scramble routes in Britain: Curved Ridge, North Buttress, Aonach Eagach….to name just a few. Given a dry forecast we also venture up the road to Fort William and the mighty north face of Ben Nevis, to tackle the awesome classic Tower Ridge - the longest route on the mountain, at the very top end of the scrambling grades (and a bit beyond).

‘ Scrambles in Glen Coe’ is ideal for those making the transition from hillwalking to serious scrambling, with instruction and coaching in route planning, scrambling technique, moving together, belaying, abseiling, route finding and interpretation, rope work and much more.

Working in groups of two we aim, by the end of the week, to teach you the skills to you need to plan and climb a classic mountain scramble route under your own steam.
