Winter Courses In Scotland - Avalanche
Winter in the mountains is a world away from summer, with virtually every dimension of the environment transformed, and both the risks and attractions arguably multiplied many times over. We offer a range of courses to help you make the transition from summer to winter conditions.

Ideal for those who need to refresh / update or have little experience of winter conditions. Participants must be able to move around on step snow slopes up to 30 degrees confidently. Whether stepping out for the first time in winter or have some experience this course is ideal.
This course begins on a Friday evening at 20.00 and finishes on Saturday early evening 17.30.
The course will focus on the main key issues of safe travel in avalanche prone terrain and practical application of theory and hazard evaluation this includes;

• How to read an avalanche report
• How to determine potential avalanche hazards
• Safety equipment
• Travelling safely in avalanche prone terrain
• Evaluating the snow pack
• What to do if you're caught in an avalanche
• Basic search and rescue techniques includes avalanche transceiver use

" Course Outline"
The course is ideal for those who are rescue team members, mountaineers, Winter ML and holders of the MIC qualification who have some experience but wish to refresh, update and improve practical avalanche knowledge in the field. The course will provide ideas, tips, coaching points and will practically assess increasing and decreasing stability of the snow-pack and the problems we face when working and travelling in potentially high risk conditions, we also study the nature of Scottish avalanche forecasting this includes;

• The chain in avalanche formation
• Problems in avalanche forecasting
• Rules about evaluating stability
• Specific snow conditions
• Minimising avalanche risk
• Searching on potential high risk terrain
• Basic search and rescue techniques includes avalanche transceiver use

“ Course Outline”
Ideal for those who need to refresh avalanche search methods. Participants must be able to move around on step snow slopes up to 30 degrees confidently, this course is aimed at those who are involved in search and rescue and those working in the mountains leading, instructing and guiding.
This course begins on a Friday evening at 20.00 and finishes on Sunday early evening 17.30.
This course will introduce search safety and tactics for avalanche burials using, SARDA, transceivers, and probes, however, we will cover the following in more detail;

• Avalanche search management
• The role of SARDA
• Minimising avalanche risks
• Rescue equipment
• Safety rules in rescue
• Safe search tactics
• Rescue procedures
