Essential tool or trendy gimmick? The GPS (Global Positioning
System) may sometimes get overhyped, but it has a genuine role to play in mountain
navigation. However, while the handsets are getting better all the time, they
can only ever be as good as the person whose hands they are in!
Do you know how to use a GPS unit…properly? Would you like to find out?
This course is suitable for those who have little or no knowledge but want to
get started quickly and confidently to ultimately become an independent safe
user of GPS technology. GPS should never be used on its own in a mountain environment,
but learning to use it along with conventional navigational aids such as map
and compass is an essential skill.
The course begins on a Saturday morning
at 9am. First we’ll
introduce you to the benefits of using GPS and Memory Map
software. Then, after 2 hours of a hands-on workshop, we’ll head outdoors
for an authentic taste of GPS on the hill, finishing around 4.30pm.
All GPS sets are supplied free of charge for the day. This course combines an
opportunity to get to grips with GPS in a practical way, with stacks of great
input from very experienced outdoor GPS trainers.
